FARMHOUSE SIDING: DESIGN AND STYLE

The modern farmhouse style has become increasingly popular over the years. Due in part, to TV shows like Fixer Upper. The clean design, crisp palette paired with wood details make for a highly desirable home.

When designing the exterior of your home, farmhouse siding plays a key role in obtaining that coveted curb appeal. For example, we gave a traditional style home a complete modern farmhouse makeover. Read more about the farmhouse siding products, styles, cost, and colors we installed for this white and black farmhouse.

STYLING A FARMHOUSE EXTERIOR

The entire home received a new envelope. Specifically, farmhouse siding, windows, doors, and architectural adornments. Additionally, exterior décor elements like the garage overhang, open rafter tails, cedar garage door, metal roof and front porch were updated.

A SUPERIOR FARMHOUSE SIDING

We highly recommend TruExterior siding and trim. It is a composite-like product with the natural aesthetic of wood siding.

  1. Reduces expansion and contraction. Consequently, no excessive “swelling”.

  2. Water resistant; therefore, it can be used in moisture-prone areas.

  3. Suitable for ground contact.

  4. Excellent paint durability. Additionally, it arrives pre-primed and ready for paint.

  5. Insect and rot resistant.

  6. Comes in smooth and wood grain.

  7. Better workability compared to wood, fiber cement or engineered wood trim.

  8. Available in 16’ lengths.

  9. 20-year limited warranty.

  10. Contains a minimum of 70% recycled content verified by SCS Global Services.

IT'S OKAY TO MIX YOUR STYLES

On our farmhouse, we installed a mixture of siding styles. Thereby, creating the modern look the homeowner desired. Most of the house features a horizontal, wide format board in a “V” groove design.

CRAFTSMAN-STYLE V-RUSTIC

The product is called Craftsman-Style V-Rustic Siding. The “V” groove creates an appealing shadow line effect.

We paired the smooth, horizontal boards with vertical board and batten siding. Likewise, the garage, dormer, back of the house and gables feature this barn-siding.

TRUEXTERIOR TRIM AS BOARD AND BATTEN

The board and batten installation utilized TruExterior trim boards for the first layer. Then, a field modified 5/8″x 1 5/8″ piece for the second layer.

TruExterior trim is ideal for use as fascia, door trim, soffits, rake boards and other various applications. It can be painted in any color!

WHAT'S A GABLE?

One of the traditional features of a farmhouse is the gable prominence. Changing the color or style of the siding accentuates this area.

When viewing the back of the home, we mirrored the vertical board and batten detail. The corner gable matches the interior screened porch wall. Thus, an aesthetically pleasing view.

TOP FARMHOUSE SIDING COLOR

Boral TruExterior siding should be painted with a quality, exterior grade paint. White is the most popular color for a modern farmhouse exterior design.

BENJAMIN MOORE

Our homeowner chose the color Simply White by Benjamin Moore. A crisp white paint. It pairs well with the warm tones in the deck, cedar herringbone garage door and coffered porch ceiling.

SHERWIN WILLIAMS

We chose to paint the house utilizing Sherwin Williams products. Tip: Bring your Benjamin Moore color sample to the paint shop and have them match it!

WHAT'S THIS GOING TO COST ME?

We are a design-build general contractor in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. The installation and painting of farmhouse siding may differ from your area. However, we have put together a sliding scale of siding costs to aid in your home remodel plans.

TRUEXTERIOR COST

On average, Boral TruExterior poly-ash siding costs $34 to $50 per square foot. This includes, the removal and home renovation preparation. It also includes, the installation and painting of the siding.

VINYL SIDING COST

If you are looking for a more cost-effective farmhouse siding, consider white vinyl siding. It can range from $9 to $20 per square foot. This also includes removal, prep, and installation.

NOTABLE FARMHOUSE DECOR PRODUCTS

This modern farmhouse exterior would be lost without its black windows. We installed Pella Lifestyle Series. A black metal-clad exterior with a prefinished white interior. Also, two wide grilles are displayed in the top sash.

If you are local to the Lakes Region, we highly recommend you visit the Pella Windows and Doors showroom in Meredith, NH. They are one of our preferred vendors.
